Outsourcing Web Development to Ukraine: Сommon Myths

Outsourcing from the Internal Perspective

Outsourcing web and software development is one of the most effective ways to cut the project budget without quality losses. Finding service providers abroad can take time, but it’s worth it. For many years Ukraine keeps its place as one of the best destinations in Eastern Europe. But still, many businesses hesitate because of the common myths and stereotypes about Ukraine. We have decided to bust some of them and give you the first-hand information and facts.

Myth 1: You will not find experienced developers in Ukraine

Let’s talk a little about the market. According to the research, Ukraine has the largest and fastest-growing number of IT professionals in Central and Eastern Europe. Its IT engineering workforce is expected to double to over 200,000 by 2020. In Ukraine, there are a lot of institutes and universities, where you can get a technical education. So it’s not about the formal figures, but also, about the intelligence and developer’s skill set.

On the market, you can find both junior engineers and developers with decades of experience. The stack of technologies is unlimited. Of course, it depends on companies field of expertise. Our basic stack includes Python, .NET, Databases, Web Servers, PHP, JavaScript, Node.js, CMS and so on (the whole list you can read here). Also, we are always open for up-to-date technologies and our team is ready to find custom solutions for customers needs. Therefore, in Ukraine, you can rise both on-time projects and wide enterprise solutions.

Myth 2: IT services are set at the incredibly low price

Briefly, it is all relative. Salaries of Ukrainian software developers are still much lower than in the USA and Western Europe, that’s true. At the same time, comparing to India or China they aren’t that low-price. And they can’t be because developers from Ukraine are more qualified and skilled, they follow international standards and their code is easier to support and maintain in a long perspective. If you want to get the project done as cheap as possible, hardly you will find a well-skilled team here. Most Ukrainian developers have received high technical education, have good language skills (we will talk about this later) and experience in delivering projects abroad.

In Ukraine, you will get both high quality and reasonable pricing policy. This and many other reasons make businesses from Western Europe and the USA to find providers and outsource web development to Ukraine.

Myth 3: Deep language and cultural barrier

Problems with communication can often cause things to come apart. Not surprisingly product owners and other responsible for the project have doubts because of this fact.

But there are no reasons to worry. Software outsourcing companies in Ukraine take English skills into consideration when hiring developers. Candidate needs to have a certain level of English skills, otherwise unlikely he will pass the interview. Plus, in Ukraine, English language is a must course in elementary, middle and high school education systems. Research has shown that over 80% of IT staff in Ukraine has intermediate and higher level of English skills:

Ukraine is located in Eastern Europe and borders with some European countries-members of the EU. Ukraine is also about to join the EU, as it professes similar values. Ukrainian IT companies accept traditional standards of business and implement leading methodologies used in the USA and European countries.

Myth 4: Companies are not reliable and everyday processes are not set

On the contrary, Ukrainian IT companies, especially the young ones, strive to earn a good reputation and to build a reliable long-term partnership with potential and current clients. For example, at Synergy Way we have an organized Dedicated Team that has been working on an enterprise project for more than 2 years now. In most cases, we use the Agile methodology of the software development process, arrange weekly and everyday Skype calls, and keep our clients tuned, so they have no reasons to worry.

We take care of all required equipment, hardware, and software. We are a member of the Microsofts Partnership Program and use only certified software.

Myth 5: Political situation in Ukraine is unstable

Sometimes we can hear that outsourcing to Ukraine nowadays is too risky. A part of Ukraine (Donetsk and Luhansk regions) is very unstable, no one argues with that. But remember that Ukraine is the largest country located entirely in Europe. Kyiv is located 700 km away from unstable regions. Plus, Ukrainian government with European partners and partners from the USA is working on stabilizing the situation. Things in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Lviv and other big cities where the most IT companies are located haven’t changed.

To finally dispel your doubts just take a look at this list of a few tech giants that have R&D centers (!) in Ukraine: Samsung (Samsung Research and Development Institute Ukraine (SRK) is one of the units of R&D infrastructure of Samsung Electronics), NetCracker, Aricent, Wargaming, Boeing, Oracle, Siemens, Magento, Ericsson.
